Meet Katy

In this episode we talk about the conversations we have with our kids about food. Even if you don’t have kids, or if you’re a parent of grown children, there’s still going to be value in this episode for you because we were all once kids ourselves and our relationship with food was developed beginning in childhood.

To give this discussion some structure I am going to be sharing 3 specific conversations you SHOULD be having with your kids about food, and then I’m going to tell you about 1 conversation you SHOULDN’T be having – and this one might surprise you and challenge you a little bit. Which is good because that’s what we’re here for, and we don’t grow if we aren’t challenged to think about and to do things differently.

Three conversations you should be having with your kids are:

  1. Listening to their bodies
  2. How to structure meals
  3. How to cook

The One Conversation You Shouldn’t Have With Your Kids

This is probably going to take you a little bit by surprise, and it might even make you really uncomfortable or argumentative. I invite you to be curious and to notice whatever reaction you have, and if you feel any degree of being activated or triggered to ask yourself, why this is triggering you.

The conversation that I would encourage you to avoid having with your kid is about “healthy eating” or nutrition. And I know this sounds bananas, because we assume that we need to teach our kids these concepts otherwise they’re going to be unhealthy throughout their life. But what the studies show is that teaching healthy eating to kids actually sets them up for having a dysfunctional and disordered relationship with food.

I am so curious to hear what’s going through your head, and the things that you were thinking, “Yeah I Katy but…” Fill in the blank what’s your “yeah, but?” I want to know what you’re not on board with, what you’re confused about, and what you’re worried about.

I want you to send these to me either via DM on Instagram or email me at katy@katyharvey.net

Don’t forget to also grab the free guide about figuring out which of the 5 phases of becoming a non-dieter you’re currently in and how to move forward to the next one and the one after that. It’s at nondietacademy.com/phases.

I can’t wait to hear your feedback on this episode and to keep this discussion going. As always, be kind to yourself and be patient. We’ll talk again soon!
