Meet Katy

Welcome back to Rebuilding Trust With Your Body!

I have to spill the tea a little bit here, because if you listen to the podcast you’re one of my ride or die people. I’ve been working on something BTS for the past couple of months and it’s going to be a bit of a glow up and an upleveling of my brand and this movement that we are creating together against diet culture, and towards trusting ourselves and our bodies. What I have come to realize is that this is bigger than just me and this podcast and the programs I run…this is literally a MOVEMENT. It’s not “me” it’s “WE.”

So nobody else knows this yet, but what you’re going to see is some new podcast cover art, some bolder messaging because I am SO FIRED UP right now, more ways for you to participate in this movement and be part of it and spread the word, and inside my programs I’m going to be re-recording the materials and adding new things because I’ve evolved and I’m a different dietitian and coach from when I first started as I’ve learned and grown, and of course as the science and research evolves too.

And next week here on the podcast I’m going to drop not just my usual Tuesday episode, but you’re going to get 3 episodes that are going to light a fire inside your soul for what is not only possible for you, but what is possible when we all band together. It is going to be so freaking amazing and I cannot wait!! You’re also going to want to make sure that you’re on my email list because I’m going to share more of the full BTS there, including the full back story behind this movement that’s happening. So go to nondietacademy.com/newsletter to get on the list (and when you sign up I’ll also send you some free goodies!!)

If you’re open to helping me spread the word, send me a DM on IG or FB and I have some options for how you can do that!! And the first thing you can do right now is rate and review the podcast if you haven’t already. That tells the podcast algorithm to show it to more people. And make sure that you’re subscribed or following the show so you automatically get the new episodes in a couple of weeks when they drop.

Ok, shifting gears because we need to have some real talk today…

You already know dieting doesn’t work…

  • You have years, maybe decades, of evidence.
  • You’ve lost weight and regained it.
  • You’ve been miserable.
  • You’ve obsessed about food.
  • You’ve canceled plans because of your body.
  • You’ve promised yourself “never again.”

And yet…

  • One bad body image day
  • One doctor’s appointment
  • One vacation photo
  • One pair of tight jeans

…and suddenly you’re considering getting back together with your toxic ex boyfriend which is basically what dieting is. WHY are you willing to trust dieting again when dieting has repeatedly betrayed you?

This isn’t meant to shame you. It’s meant to wake you up, and to help you get genuinely curious about why you keep repeating a pattern, or considering going back to something that so clearly isn’t serving you. This conversation is going to be the exact thing you need to stop repeating this cycle that has kept you so stuck for so long.

Before we dive into our main topic for today, you know what time it is…We’ve got some Wellness Woo to talk about.

Wellness Woo is the stuff that diet and wellness culture tells us we should do in the name of health, but it’s really based on pseudoscience, exaggerated claims, or just nonsense.

Today’s Wellness Woo is: https://drstephanies.com/ – s/o to Paige in NDC!

You go to the homepage of the Dr. Stephanies website and it says “Doctor Formulated GLP-1 Booster.”

Who is this Dr. Stephanie? She is a pharmacist.

And this is where I take issue with the term “doctor” for anyone who is not a medical doctor – an MD or DO.

I am not downplaying the expertise of pharmacists at all. And I get that they earned their title of doctor. But this is where wellness culture SUCKS.

Because the general public sees this and they assume that “doctor formulated” means medical doctor. And I’m willing to bet a million dollars most people assume Dr. Stephanie is a medical doctor.

We see the same thing with chiropractors using their “doctor” credential to willingly mislead people.

She’s not falsely representing herself, but she’s absolutely using her credential to allow people to believe and assume what they will, and to leverage this to her benefit. That’s a problem.

The next issue I have here is the concept of a GLP-1 booster…(explain)

Claims:

  • Turn off your appetite
  • Turn on your GLP-1 hormone
  • Supports glucose metabolism
  • Reduce cravings and hunger
  • Feel full faster
  • What’s in it?
    • Lemon bioflavinoid extract (concentrated extract of lemon peels)
    • Green tea
    • Turmeric
    • Resveratrol

$25/month

“Clean”

Results vary, but many users notice reduced appetite and improved energy within a few weeks of consistent use. For best results, we recommend daily use for 12+ weeks.

Also sells:
24 hour carb and sugar blocker

Sugar down gummies

GLP-1 user support

GLP-1 buddy

Overnight cleanse

Beef organs

Colostrum

This is INSANE for an actual pharmacist to be peddling supplements that she knows very well are manipulative and unregulated.

If you have an example of Wellness Woo that you want to share, send it to me at rebuildingtrustwithyourbody@gmail.com.

Ok, that’s enough of that. Moving on to today’s main topic…

You already know dieting doesn’t work

Your problem is not lack of information.

  • You already know diets don’t work long-term, even if it looks like it’s working temporarily.
  • You already know restriction leads to overeating.
  • You already know weight loss isn’t permanently sustainable for most people.

YET you still want to go back. Why? That’s the million dollar question. And the answer isn’t logical. Otherwise you wouldn’t keep doing it, or keep wanting to do it. (Definition of insanity)

The reason that dieting STILL feels so tempting is emotional. And it’s because deep down you still don’t trust yourself. And diet culture has created this illusion of control where it makes you think that it’s making you more in control over food and your body, when it’s literally doing the exact opposite.

Dieting Is like a Toxic Ex Boyfriend

Hear me out with this analogy…A toxic boyfriend:

  • Lies to you
  • Makes promises
  • Breaks promises
  • Damages your self-esteem
  • Keeps you stuck
  • Somehow convinces you he’s changed

Dieting:

  • “This time will be different.”
  • “This plan is healthier.”
  • “This coach knows the secret.”
  • “This isn’t a diet, it’s a lifestyle.”
  • Every failed diet gets blamed on YOU.
  • The diet never takes responsibility.
  • You keep remembering the honeymoon phase, and you conveniently forget the suffering that came later. I want you to stop and think for a second about the reasons that dieting

Here’s the mind warp of the whole thing…

You’re Not Actually Craving Weight Loss (and it’s not the boyfriend that you actually wanted)

Weight loss is often a proxy for:

  • Feeling worthy
  • Feeling attractive
  • Feeling safe
  • Feeling accepted
  • Feeling in control
  • Feeling healthy
  • Feeling less ashamed

The problem: You’re chasing weight loss when what you actually want is RELIEF and a sense of worthiness. And dieting temporarily gives that to you, and gives you HOPE for a better life.

The Fantasy You’re Really Buying

The real underlying fantasy isn’t just “I’ll lose 20 pounds and feel happier and healthier.”

The REAL fantasy is what you think will happen as a byproduct of that:

  • Then I’ll stop hating photos.
  • Then I’ll stop judging myself.
  • Then I’ll feel confident.
  • Then I’ll wear the swimsuit.
  • Then I’ll start living.

It’s the byproduct of what you believe weight loss will give you that you’re yearning for. And the reality is that you very well could CHOOSE to do these things that you’re telling yourself you have to put on hold until you lose weight… you could choose to stop picking yourself apart in photos, stop avoiding photos, embody confidence, wear your swimsuit and get in the pool, start living your life more fully. And yes, I get that if you live in a larger body there might be certain things that are harder or that you can’t do in your here-and-now body, and I don’t want to invalidate that that’s hard. That doesn’t mean you’re unworthy of living life to the fullest capacity in your here-and-now body though, or of asking for accommodations that you might need. I also encourage you to check out organizations like All Bodies on Bikes and the different social media accounts for fat runners and fat yoga and people doing things in larger bodies that you might not think you can do, but perhaps you could if you gave it a try and met yourself where you are at and built up from there…

I also want you to understand that many people have reached their goal weight and still hated themselves. This is not the guarantee you think it is.

You’re Using Dieting to Avoid the Harder Work

Dieting often feels easier than:

  • Grieving the body you thought you’d have
  • Accepting uncertainty
  • Challenging fatphobia
  • Learning body respect
  • Trusting yourself around food
  • Building health habits without weight-loss motivation

Dieting gives you a project to focus on that feels like self-care and that feels products.

What’s different with IE is that it asks you to build a relationship, rather than treating yourself like a fixer upper project.

The harder work might mean that you have to face the issues with your kids or in your marriage, or the reality that you hate your job, or that you have no friends, or that your identity is wrapped up in being a “healthy eater” or in your job and you don’t know who you are outside of those things.

If Dieting Worked, You’d Already Be Done

  • How many diets have you done?
  • How many Mondays have you started over? I used to be the QUEEN of starting over on Monday.
  • How many times have you promised yourself this was the last one?

And here’s the question I really want you to ponder and journal about:

What am I hoping dieting will give me that I need to learn how to give myself another way?

A lot of people will choose a comfortable hell over an uncomfortable heaven, and that’s what dieting is. It’s comfortable because it’s familiar. But that doesn’t make it helpful, healthy or productive….but it FEELS like it’s helpful, healthy and productive because that’s the lie we’ve been sold over and over again.

And that’s why this movement that we are building together is so important. It’s absolutely crucial for our world right now…

In case nobody has told you today – you are ENOUGH ALREADY. We’ll talk again soon.
