Have you ever found yourself thinking, “I KNOW all of this stuff. Why am I still struggling?”
You’ve read the intuitive eating books, listened to the podcasts, joined the Facebook groups, followed the coaches on Instagram, and maybe even worked through the workbook. You understand that dieting doesn’t work as a long-term solution. You know that you’re supposed to listen to your body, honor your hunger, and make peace with food.
And yet…
You still find yourself tempted to download MyFitnessPal when your pants feel tight. You consider weighing, measuring, and tracking your food again after a day of eating more than you intended. You see GLP-1 medication ads and wonder if maybe that’s the answer after all.
You might even feel frustrated with yourself because you KNOW better. You know you don’t want to go back to dieting, but you also haven’t quite figured out how to make intuitive eating work consistently.
So what’s going on?
Here’s what I want you to understand: You have all the information. You’re just struggling with how to integrate what you know into your everyday life.
And that matters more than you might think.
More Information Isn’t Necessarily the Answer
When intuitive eating isn’t clicking, it’s easy to think you need to go back to the beginning, like rereading Intuitive Eating, going through the workbook again, or listening to another podcast in hopes it’ll finally explain what you’ve been missing.
And listen, I’m not saying those resources aren’t valuable. Having a solid understanding of intuitive eating principles and strategies is important. You need that foundation.
But there’s a difference between understanding something and being able to consistently put it into practice.
Think about how long you’ve been living in diet culture. For many people, that’s decades of learning to distrust their bodies, judge their food choices, fear weight gain, and believe that controlling their eating is the way to feel better about themselves.
Those beliefs don’t magically disappear because you read a book.
You can know all ten principles of intuitive eating and still struggle to apply them when life gets complicated. You can explain why dieting doesn’t work and still feel pulled toward restriction when your body changes.
You can understand that you deserve to eat without guilt and still feel uncomfortable when you eat something you previously considered off-limits.
That’s because knowledge is only one piece of the puzzle.
You can read and write about intuitive eating all day long, but until you start actually DOING the work in your everyday life, you’re unlikely to experience the peace you’re looking for.
The Missing Piece: Integrating Intuitive Eating Into Your Life
The real work is integration.
Integration means taking what you know about intuitive eating and learning how to apply it in real-life situations, not just when everything is easy and you’re feeling good about your body.
It’s one thing to listen to your hunger when you’re home alone, relaxed, and have plenty of time to figure out what sounds satisfying. It’s another thing entirely when you’re stressed out by your kids, overwhelmed at work, or dealing with emotions that make you want to eat for comfort or restrict your food to feel more in control.
This is where integration gets challenging.
You aren’t just trying to remember a few intuitive eating principles. You’re learning to respond differently to situations that have triggered old beliefs and behaviors for years.
And that takes practice. It also takes more than simply telling yourself to try harder.
Why Intuitive Eating Can Feel Like It’s Working…Until It Doesn’t
Many women who come to work with me aren’t brand-new to intuitive eating. They’ve been learning about it and trying to put it into practice for a while.
Some feel like it’s kinda, sorta working, but they aren’t getting the results they hoped for. They might still feel out of control around certain foods, struggle with overeating, or experience guilt when they eat things like cake or pasta.
Others are noticing changes in their weight and feeling unsure how to navigate those changes. They might be replacing their wardrobe with larger sizes or worrying about what their latest lab results mean. They know dieting isn’t the answer, but they aren’t sure what to do next.
And then there are people who feel like they were doing really well with intuitive eating for a while, only to find themselves slipping back into old habits.
Maybe they start avoiding carbohydrates again, weighing themselves more frequently or tracking their calories, or get pulled back into the latest diet or wellness trend because they’re feeling uncomfortable in their bodies.
They end up flipping back and forth between intuitive eating and dieting, wondering why they can’t seem to make intuitive eating stick.
This means there’s a difference between knowing what to do and having the skills, support, and practice to follow through when things get difficult.
Integration is what helps intuitive eating become your new normal instead of something you have to constantly remind yourself to do.
What Does It Actually Look Like When Intuitive Eating Becomes Your New Normal?
When you’re integrating intuitive eating, it starts to feel less like a set of rules you’re trying to follow and more like the way you naturally approach food and your body.
That doesn’t mean you’ll never have a challenging food or body image moment again. Those always come up. But now, you’ll have the tools and confidence to navigate those moments without automatically returning to dieting.
Here’s what that can look like:
You Can Eat at Restaurants Without Calculating Everything First
You go out to dinner with friends and order what sounds good to you.
You’re not looking up the calories on the menu before you leave the house. You’re not waiting to see what everyone else orders so you can decide whether it’s acceptable to get the burger or whether you should stick with a salad.
You can make a decision based on your preferences, hunger, satisfaction, and what sounds good in that moment.
You Can Go to the Doctor Without Food Guilt Taking Over
You have a doctor’s appointment, and you don’t feel like you need to restrict your food all day beforehand because you’re afraid of being weighed.
You don’t cancel the appointment because you’re ashamed of your weight or worried about what your doctor might say.
You can prioritize your health without feeling like you need to punish yourself with food restriction.
You Can Participate in Life Without Hiding Your Body
You put on a swimsuit and go to a water aerobics class. You get in the pool with your kids or grandkids. You join a group photo instead of finding an excuse to stand behind everyone else.
You stop waiting until your body looks different to participate in experiences that matter to you.
You Can Keep Your Favorite Foods at Home
You can have Cheetos, Oreos, or BBQ potato chips in your pantry without feeling like they’re constantly calling your name from the kitchen.
These foods don’t have to feel like something you need to avoid, hide, or eat before you start another diet. They’re simply foods you can choose to eat when you want them.
You Can Make Nutrition Choices Without Returning to Diet Rules
You can make adjustments to support your health without becoming extreme, rigid, or restrictive.
You don’t have to choose between completely ignoring nutrition and obsessively controlling everything you eat.
You can honor your health while also respecting your body’s needs and your quality of life.
You Can Navigate Body Image Challenges Without Losing Your Entire Day
You might still have moments when you don’t love how your body looks or feels.
But a difficult body image moment doesn’t have to turn into an entire day of negative self-talk, food restriction, or promises to change your body.
You know how to respond to those feelings without letting them dictate every decision you make.
And you can navigate the holidays with more ease and joy instead of spending the season worrying about food and weight gain.
That’s what integration can make possible.
Stop Putting Your Life on Hold Until You Feel Better About Your Body
There’s something else I want you to think about.
- How long have you been waiting to feel comfortable in your body before you let yourself fully participate in your life?
- How many photos have you avoided because you didn’t like how you looked?
- How many times have you said no to getting ice cream with your kids or grandkids because you were worried about the food or what it might mean for your weight?
- How many times have you avoided intimacy with your partner or put off dating because you feel insecure about your body?
- How long have you been waiting to buy clothes you actually like, go swimming, take a trip, or do something you’ve always wanted to do until you lose weight?
And how many years have gone by while you’ve been working on getting your body to where you think it needs to be?
Three years? Five years? Ten years?
I don’t want you to look back and realize that you spent another decade thinking about food, worrying about your weight, and waiting for your body to change instead of living your life.
You deserve to be in the photos of your own life, even on days when you’re having a hard time with body image.
You deserve to eat cake on your birthday without saving up for it or promising to skip carbohydrates at your next meal. You deserve pants that fit comfortably without having to restrict and punish yourself to fit into an old size. And you deserve to walk into a room and take up the amount of space your body takes up without feeling ashamed of it.
Your life gets so much bigger and fuller when you’re not constantly frustrated with your eating and your body image.
Why You Need More Than Willpower to Make This Change
If you’ve been trying to figure out intuitive eating on your own for a long time, I want you to consider whether you’re expecting yourself to do something incredibly difficult without the support and structure you need.
You’ve spent years, possibly decades, learning how to think and behave in ways that are rooted in diet culture. Now you’re trying to unlearn those patterns and build a completely different relationship with food and your body.
That’s not a small undertaking.
You need the right information and strategies. You need a strong foundation in intuitive eating. But you also need to practice applying those strategies in the situations where your old habits tend to show up.
This is why the integration piece is so important.
It’s also why I don’t want you to keep telling yourself that you just need to try harder, read another book, or start over with the workbook. You might benefit from revisiting those resources, but they aren’t necessarily going to give you the ongoing practice and support required to make lasting changes.
You can’t keep doing the same things and expect different results.
Nothing changes if nothing changes.
You Deserve to Make Peace With Food and Your Body
I want to leave you with this reminder: This journey is about so much more than what you eat or what your body weighs.
Yes, nutrition and physical health matter. But your mental health matters, too. Your self-esteem, your sense of worthiness, and your ability to enjoy your life matter.
You deserve to be fully present at holiday gatherings instead of sitting there debating whether you’ll let yourself eat the pie. You deserve to enjoy time with your family without constantly thinking about your body. You deserve to stop erasing yourself from photos because diet culture has convinced you that your body is wrong. And you deserve to experience the peace, confidence, happiness, and joy that can come from making peace with food and your body.
Diet culture wants you to believe you’re too fat, too old, too wrinkly, or somehow inadequate. It wants you to keep chasing a different body and believing that your life will finally begin when you get there.
But you are ENOUGH ALREADY.
