Summer can be an especially challenging time for body image. Between the swimsuit and shorts season and the barrage of photos from vacations and family reunions, it’s easy to feel self-conscious. But summer should be a time of joy and freedom, not stress and self-criticism. So, let’s talk about some summer do’s and don’ts to help you navigate body image with confidence and grace.

Summer Do’s for Body Image

DO: Get In The Pool

Recently, I was at a pool party, sitting with the other adults while the kids played in the pool. My son, Jackson, asked if I was going to get in. It was a hot day, and the water looked inviting, so I jumped in. I noticed I was among the only adults in the pool and wondered if body insecurities held others back.

It’s important to push past those insecurities. I didn’t feel amazing in my swimsuit—it’s like walking around in your underwear—but I wasn’t going to let that stop me from making memories with my kids. So, my challenge to you this summer is to get in the water. Wear the swimsuit, embrace the moment, and don’t let body image hold you back.

DO: Normalize Cellulite, Sweating, and Chafing

Let’s stop pretending that cellulite is something to be ashamed of. It’s a natural part of the human body. This summer, pledge to wear shorts when it’s hot and be comfortable rather than suffering in long pants to hide your legs.

Chafing is another common issue, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Products like Body Glide and Chub Rub can help prevent discomfort. Also, let’s normalize sweating. Everyone sweats, especially in the summer heat. Use cooling towels and portable fans, or just carry a sweat towel. Embrace your body’s natural reactions without shame.

DO: Be In The Photos

Capture those summer memories! Be in the photos, whether it’s a vacation, a family reunion, or a simple day at the park. Don’t hide behind the camera or delete pictures because you’re self-conscious. Your loved ones cherish those memories, and you’ll be glad you have them to look back on. The more you allow yourself to be in photos, the easier it becomes.

DO: Live Life Fully In The Body You Have Now

Don’t wait for your body to change to enjoy life. Paddleboard, attend concerts, go to baseball games—do whatever brings you joy. Your body is capable of beautiful things right now. Even if you have physical limitations, find activities that you enjoy and that work for your body. Life is too short to miss out on joy because of body shame.

Summer Don’ts for Body Image

DON’T: Go On A Diet

Summer can bring pressure to lose weight quickly for vacations, reunions, or weddings. However, diets are often temporary fixes that lead to more weight gain in the long run. Focus on sustainable, healthy habits rather than restrictive diets. Enjoy the season without the pressure of dieting.

DON’T: Skip Out on Fun Things Because of Body Shame

Don’t let body image keep you from living fully. Don’t hold yourself back, whether it’s dancing with friends, attending events, or trying new activities. Make a list of things you’ve avoided due to body shame and challenge yourself to start experiencing them. Take back your power and live life to the fullest.

DON’T: Pick Yourself Apart in Photos

In photos, resist the urge to zoom in and critique your body. Instead, focus on the memories and experiences captured. If seeing yourself in photos is too difficult right now, that’s okay. But avoid dwelling on perceived flaws. Remember, people are not judging you as harshly as you might think.

DON’T: Restrict (or Save Up) When You’re At Events Like Summer BBQ’s

Avoid the temptation to “save up” calories for a big summer event or restrict yourself while you’re there. Your body needs consistent nourishment. Enjoy the food and festivities without guilt. Find a balance that allows you to indulge without feeling deprived.

Embrace Your Worth

In case nobody has told you today, you are worthy just as you are. Summer is a time to create beautiful memories and enjoy life.
