Meet Katy

You’ve learned about intuitive eating – read the books, listened to the podcast, understand the principles so well you could probably explain them to someone else – so why do you still feel stuck?

It’s easy for it to feel like it’s just you, can I tell you a secret? More often than not, it’s how you’re trying to apply intuitive eating.

People genuinely want food freedom, but they unknowingly carry old dieting beliefs into their intuitive eating journey that keep them stuck, even when they’re doing many things “right.” Let’s look at three of the biggest reasons this happens.

Reason #1: You’re Changing Your Behaviors, But Not Your Beliefs

You’ve given yourself permission to eat foods that used to feel off-limits or forbidden, so on the surface, you’re doing intuitive eating, right? But underneath, you still believe these foods are “bad.” You feel guilty after eating them.

Or maybe you’ve started honoring your hunger, but when you accidentally skip lunch because work got busy, a part of you secretly feels proud. Why? Because somewhere deep down, the old belief is still there: Eating less is better.

But the reality is you make decisions based on what you believe, not just what you know.

So that while you may know diets don’t work long term, if part of you still believes thinner automatically means healthier, happier, or more successful, those beliefs will continue influencing your choices.

That’s why intuitive eating can feel like swimming upstream. You’re trying to think like an intuitive eater while still believing the messages diet culture taught you.

To start shifting out of that belief, ask:

  • What story immediately pops into your head when you think about eating dessert?
  • What do you assume when your jeans fit differently?
  • Where does your mind go if your doctor mentions cholesterol?

Those automatic thoughts reveal the beliefs that still need healing.

Reason #2: You’re Measuring Progress the Wrong Way

One of the biggest mindset shifts in intuitive eating is learning to redefine what progress actually looks like.

Many people still use weight as their scoreboard. If the scale goes down, intuitive eating must be working. If the scale goes up, they assume they’re failing. But that’s not how healing works.

Think about everything that has changed that can’t be measured by a number, like eating a PB&J without feeling guilty or ordering what sounds good at the restaurant without automatically choosing the salad.

These might feel like small victories, but they’re actually life changing.

Food freedom isn’t just about what you eat. It’s about getting your life back. If you’re only measuring your progress by the scale or your clothing size, you’re likely missing some of the most meaningful changes happening beneath the surface.

Reason #3: You Can’t See Your Own Blind Spots

Have you ever searched everywhere for your phone while it was in your hand or looked for your sunglasses when they were sitting on top of your head? Me too.

We all have blind spots…and the same thing happens in your relationship with food. The thoughts you’ve repeated for years – or even decades – feel so normal that your brain treats them as facts instead of the red flags they are. You think they’re common sense, which is why it’s just so difficult to notice it in your own thinking patterns.

Why Coaching Can Be Such a Powerful Turning Point

Some people think that coaching is just getting a meal plan or someone telling you what to eat. The real value of coaching is having someone who can notice what you can’t, like:

  • All-or-nothing thinking.
  • Fear disguised as healthy habits.
  • Perfectionism that’s keeping you stuck.
  • Old dieting beliefs that still influence your decisions.
  • The subtle ways restriction continues showing up.

An outside perspective helps you see what has become invisible to you.

How Do You Know It’s Time to Ask for Help?

Many people treat asking for help like a last resort, but think about it this way: elite athletes have coaches, therapists have therapists, physicians have physicians. So why should healing your relationship with food be something you have to figure out entirely on your own?

Here are some signs that it may be time to get support.

  • You’re consuming more information than you’re implementing. You’ve read the books, listened to the podcasts, followed the intuitive eating experts online, but your day-to-day relationship with food hasn’t changed much. At some point, it’s time to stop getting more information and start applying it.
  • You keep starting over. Maybe you have moments where everything makes sense. You’re motivated, ready to make it happen, and promised this time will be different…but two weeks later, you’re right back where you started. It’s exhausting. Support helps you break it.
  • You constantly wonder if you’re doing it right. If you spend hours Googling questions like “How do I do intuitive eating without gaining weight?” or looking up advice from different experts, your brain is probably working much harder than it needs to. Healing shouldn’t require constant second-guessing.
  • Health concerns keep pulling you back toward dieting. This is so, so common. Maybe your doctor mentions high cholesterol or perimenopause, and suddenly, you’re standing at a crossroads. Do you trust your body or do you go back on a diet? Learning how to honor your health without falling back into restriction is one of the most valuable parts of getting personalized support.
  • You know what to do, but you can’t get yourself to do it. This is where information and coaching become two different things. Even though you know restriction backfires, food isn’t good or bad, and consistent eating matters, you keep slipping into old habits.
  • You’re tired. Tired of starting over or wondering whether you’re doing intuitive eating correctly. Healing doesn’t have to feel this exhausting.

You Don’t Get Extra Credit for Struggling Alone

One of the biggest myths we believe is that asking for help means we’ve failed. But really, it’s often the exact opposite. Reaching out usually means you’ve reached the point where you recognize you can’t see your own blind spots anymore.

That’s wisdom.

You don’t get extra credit for struggling longer than necessary or earn a badge of honor for spending years trying to figure everything out by yourself.

Healing your relationship with food is complex. After decades of living in diet culture, it makes sense that you’d need support untangling those messages.

The Breakthrough You’re Looking For May Be Closer Than You Think

If you’ve been feeling stuck with intuitive eating, take a deep breath. The fact that you’re still searching for answers tells me something important: You haven’t given up.

That’s a strength.

Instead of assuming intuitive eating isn’t working, consider that you may simply need a new perspective. Sometimes one conversation can uncover the very thing that’s been keeping you stuck for months. Because when you stop thinking like a dieter, start measuring the right kind of progress, and allow someone to help you identify your blind spots, everything begins to feel different.

You don’t have to spend another year second-guessing every bite or wondering whether you’re doing this right. The freedom you’re looking for isn’t found in another diet. It’s found in learning to trust yourself again.

And if you need help getting there, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with asking for it.

In case nobody has told you today, you are enough already.
