That's right, there are no benefits.  Human beings existed and fed themselves for thousands of years before we even knew what a calorie was.  Most people who currently count calories or worry about the number of calories they consume probably can't even tell you what a calorie is in the first place.  

So what is a calorie?  It is a unit of energy.  Kind of like watts for a lightbulb.  Specifically, a Calorie (more specifically a kilocalorie is what we refer to in popular culture when we discuss calories, which is why RD's shorthand is "kcal") is the amount of energy it takes to raise 1 kg of water 1 degree celsius.

Seems pretty silly to be afraid of calories now, huh?
