Meet Katy

The internet is filled with (mis)information about food and nutrition.  It never ceases to amaze me how much traffic and credence these websites get.  Only a fraction of people choose to seek out accurate information about food, and I don't necessarily blame them.  It takes more work to find credible information, especially when junk information is often masked as credible.  There's also no shortage of articles and social media posts that are brought straight to the user – information they didn't even seek out, it just landed in their lap.  These are the things I'm most sick of hearing about:

1. Clean eating – Stop.  Just stop.  This is ridiculous.  Unless you dropped your food in the mud and it's literally dirty, here's no such thing.

2. Gluten – Unless you have been diagnosed with Celiac disease or a legit gluten intolerance you need not worry about gluten.  (Do you even know what gluten is?)

3. Sugar – It's not toxic, poisonous or any other scary thing.  It's a category of carbohydrates that comes in many different varieties, none better or worse than others, just different (e.g. think lactose vs. glucose vs. sucrose vs. fructose).  If it were toxic our species wouldn't have survived this long.

4. Superfoods – These are as real as superheros.

5. Juice cleanse/detox – You don't need to cleanse or detox your body.  That's what your liver is for.  Also, these products/diets don't do anything.  (But come on, you kind of knew that already, right?)

6. Kale – It's just a green leafy vegetable.  Eat it if you like it, forgo it if you don't.  There's nothing magical about it.

7. Processed foods – Almost everything you eat has been processed to some degree.  The bag of organic spinach you bought for your "superfood" salad – it was processed when it was picked, cut, cleaned and packaged.  Eat a variety of food from all the different food groups and you'll be just fine.

Stop falling for the hype around these topics.  De-sensationalizing food isn't sexy, it's boring, and maybe that's a good thing.  Food is just food.  Let's get our entertainment from somewhere else.
